Caritas, gaudium, pax - love, joy, peace and other characteristics of the Christian life which Saint Paul describes as the very fruit of the Spirit can sometimes seem to be as elusive as they are attractive. Nonetheless, they are, in a real sense, the sign and seal of the life of the Spirit in the soul. This study by the Rector of Saint Vincent Seminary, Father Kurt Belsole, concerns itself with one of those characteristics of life in the Spirit, i.e., joy, or gaudium, as it is presented by Saint Benedict in his Rule 49, 6-7.
