“Welcome to the Wetlands! There are five more clues hidden to help you find your way. Each clue has information for you to read and a question for you to answer for your homework.”

The First Clue
This project is easy
and really quite fun
All the clues are hidden
out in the sun

In a box you'll find papers
that tell what to do.
Each paper will teach you
and give you a clue.

Take only one copy,
Search there, underneath.
Your next clue you'll find
at the Black Walnut leaf.

“Wow, this sounds hard,” Emma said. “What does a black walnut leaf look like?”

But her father said, “Wait, maybe not. Look, there are sign posts by some of the trees. Let’s see what they say.”

They walked over to the first one. The small square sign sat atop a wooden post. The sign told the name of the tree and had a picture of the tree’s leaf and seed.

Emma read the sign aloud, “Hemlock. This isn’t a black walnut tree.”

“That’s ok,” replied Mr. O’Brien, “let’s keep looking.”

The next sign they came to said “Black Walnut” “This is it!” exclaimed Emma. “Good work,” said Emma’s father. “Now we need to look for the clue.”

Emma looked all around the sign, but she didn’t see any box. So she looked on the underside of the sign and exclaimed, “I think I found it!” There was a wooden box. It had papers inside.

Mr. O’Brien opened the box and took a paper from it. He handed the paper to Emma. “See what it says.”
