Gerhart B. Ladner gave the 16th Wimmer Memorial Lecture (1947-1970) in 1962 at Saint Vincent, Ad Imaginem Dei: The Image of Man in Mediaeval Art.
Ladner, a Mediaeval art historian was born in 1905 in Vienna and died in 1993 in Los Angeles.

He completed his doctoral thesis on eleventh-century Italian paintings, taught iconography and Christian archaeology at the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies.

He spent more than five decades working on a five volumes of the images of popes painted and sculpted in their own times. He also studied images of other persons in their cultural context.

He taught Medieval history at the University of California. One of his key areas of interest was the image of man in Medieval art, which was the focus of his lecture given at Saint Vincent.

This 166-page illustrated volume was published in 1965, three years after the lecture. More than 40 illustrations are included in the book. A number of hardcover original editions of this work was discovered during a building renovation and are now available.
